Caffeine Addiction

We can’t do without our morning cuppa, can we? But like they say, anything in excess is rarely good for health. The same goes with your chai or coffee, which when taken in safe limits, can have a wonderful stimulating effect. But in high does, it might actually cause you trouble.

Caffeine is an alkaloid present in:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Chocolate
  • Energy drinks
  • Caffeinated soft drinks
  • Certain medications

Comparison of caffeine levels among common beverages:

Brewed coffee >Instant coffee >Espresso >Black Tea >Green Tea >Herbal Tea (nil)

While caffeine in low doses can be stimulating and help you stay alert, too much of it (>500mg) can reach high blood levels and may cause Caffeine Intoxication.

Signs of Caffeine Intoxication are:

  • Restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Inability to sleep
  • Frequent urination
  • Increased heart rate
  • Muscle twitching
  • Racing of thoughts

If you are a habitual drinker of caffeinated beverages and you suddenly skip a drink, then you might experience withdrawal symptoms.

Caffeine Withdrawal symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Sleepiness
  • Irritability
  • Decreased focus
  • Depressed mood

Guide to modify your caffeine intake:

  • Be aware of caffeine containing beverages and products
  • Calculate your daily caffeine intake in mg
  • Set a realistic limit
  • Gradually reduce your intake towards your set goal
  • Consider switching to beverages with a lower caffeine content such as green tea or decaffeinated drinks

So now that you know about caffeine addiction, maybe it’s time to take care of your brewing issues.

Better ‘latte’ than never!
